UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES OF IITJ: CURRICULUM FOR A GLOBAL ENGINEER
Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur is committed to educational excellence through a strong student-focused learning experience and aims to provide quality education with contemporary and highly professional curricula. To achieve this objective, IIT Jodhpur undertook a comprehensive curriculum revision in 2019 and introduced a new curriculum. This article highlights the philosophy ingrained in the new curriculum and its key features.
The societal challenges of the 21st century are profound and wide-ranging. Basic needs such as energy, food, water, housing, mobility, and health will become even more critical as the global population exceeds 9 billion. The demand for sustainable development will require innovative engineering talent and leadership. Moreover, the emergence of a connected, competitive, and entrepreneurial global economy demands engineers with technical competencies and professional skills that differ from those required in the past. These factors clearly justify a transformative revision of the undergraduate curriculum.
Some of the attributes expected of modern engineers are:
- Flexibility to understand and manage rapidly evolving technologies
- Ability to identify, define, and solve problems
- Proficiency in both theory and practical applications
- Skills to handle unconventional engineering challenges
- Capability for creative thinking
- Entrepreneurial experience
- Understanding of public policy implications
Today, the creative function of engineering is viewed in a broader context, in which knowledge is created across disciplines, dissolving traditional boundaries among science, the humanities, the social sciences, the arts, and engineering. IIT Jodhpur has adopted a new programme structure, alongside classical programmes, to address these emerging opportunities.
Objectives
The objective of the new curriculum at the Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur is to define a novel instructional paradigm and content plan that addresses the modern demands of professional education, based on the philosophy of outcome-based education.
The curriculum is built on four guiding principles:
- All students can learn and succeed, but not necessarily on the same day or in the same way.
- Each success achieved by a student leads to further success.
- Academic institutions are responsible for creating and nurturing conditions for success.
- The academic system acknowledges and respects challenging initiatives without fear of failure.
Unique Features of the Undergraduate (UG) Curriculum
The key features of the undergraduate curriculum are as follows:
-
Strong Foundation & Multidisciplinary Approach:
The curriculum emphasizes fundamentals of basic and engineering sciences, enabling students to develop a broad, multidisciplinary perspective. Departmental courses focus on fundamental scientific principles underlying technologies. - Co-curricular & Creative Development:
Opportunities are provided to pursue co-curricular and extracurricular interests through non-graded courses such as social connect, performing arts, and communication skills. These enhance creativity, imagination, and enthusiasm for exploring new domains. - Early Design Thinking Exposure:
Early design courses focus on conceptual design rather than discipline-specific artifacts. Students learn that engineering design is open-ended and extends beyond traditional boundaries. - Continuous Intellectual Engagement:
Design credits ensure continuous engagement in intellectual and integrative learning processes, helping students build and strengthen their internal knowledge structure. - Entrepreneurship Integration:
Entrepreneurship is offered as a minor, providing exposure to product design, prototyping, market analysis, and emerging technology trends, preparing students to innovate and create. - Specialization & Industry Exposure:
Options such as Department Area Specialization and a five-year B.Tech. + M.Tech. program allows in-depth study. Industry-linked projects provide real-world experience through collaborations with industry and R&D organizations. - Interdisciplinary Learning:
The curriculum incorporates emerging fields like Artificial Intelligence, Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), IoT, Robotics, and Smart Healthcare, promoting interdisciplinary problem-solving skills. - Flexible Degree Options:
A Double B.Tech. A program with a second degree in Engineering Science enables students to apply diverse knowledge across disciplines and adapt to novel challenges. - Continuous Evaluation System:
Student performance is assessed through a combination of examinations and continuous evaluation methods such as quizzes, assignments, lab work, projects, and class participation, supported by technology-enabled tools. - Refined Grading System:
A finer grading structure ensures more precise, fair, and reliable evaluation of student performance. - Holistic Development Focus:
The curriculum emphasizes strong foundational knowledge, continuous learning, interdisciplinary breadth, design thinking, creativity, critical thinking, social responsibility, professional ethics, and sustainability.
