Soni

Joined the School of Liberal Arts at IIT Jodhpur in April 2025. Her research focuses on the histories of childhood, youth, education, and gender in colonial and postcolonial South Asia. Her scholarship has appeared in leading peer-reviewed international journals like South Asia and the International Review of Social History. She has been the recipient of several prestigious fellowships and grants from institutions such as IIT Bombay, the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Transnational Research Group (German Historical Institute London). Soni is currently completing her first monograph, ‘Saving’ the Orphans: Historicizing ‘Child Protection’ in Colonial North India, 1830–1943, under contract with Palgrave Macmillan (UK). Her second major project, The History of the Modern Girl in Postcolonial India (1947–1990), investigates the emergence of new visual, textual, and consumer cultures of girlhood. This project was recently awarded the Marie Curie Seal of Excellence.
