Concept Note for RTDD 2022

Our surrounding nature spurs ideation and helps invent appropriate technologies for human use. There are several embedded technologies in our rural traditions and culture which may require revamping with human advancement while maintaining its sustainable rural identity.

Rural Technology Action Group (RuTAG) was initiated in 2003-2004 by our Chairman Board of Governors Prof R Chidambaram who was then the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India.

RuTAG addresses demand-driven technical challenges posed in villages of rural India by bringing together technical knowhow and assistance from Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), S&T institutions, Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), State and Central Government organizations. and local NGOs. Interventions are need based and specific to the local surrounding and preserve the rural identity of the technologies.

Several people have been successfully contributing to this required work with scientific, mathematical and technological temperament to understand rural technology for the last two decades within RuTAG. These people were and are associated to RuTAG Centers in Kharagpur, Guwahati, Delhi, Bombay, Kanpur, Madras, Roorkee and University of Jammu. Recently several universities and newer IITs started participating in the RuTAG projects and contributing to the important legacy of the RuTAG centers with the same scientific temperament to cater to demand driven grass root challenges.

The first International Conference on Rural Technology Development and Delivery :RuTAG and its Synergy with other Initiatives (RTDD 2018) was organized by RuTAG IIT Delhi on its campus during March 9-11, 2018. Further the second conference of RTDD 2020 was hosted by RuTAG IIT Madras. This time IIT Jodhpur is taking the initiative to organize the Third RTDD conference on 04-06 March 2022 in hybrid mode.

At present, RuTAG team at IIT Jodhpur is working on finding sustainable solutions to, rural water management, reclamation of contaminated soils in desert areas, skilling artisans, non-farm and on-farm technologies and technologies for traditional livelihood sustenance. Grass root design transfer at point-of-use or to practicing communities is used as an engine of growth for rural development under the already-developed synergy between RuTAG IITD, IIT Jodhpur and community itself.
