Metal Additive Manufacturing: Recent Developments, Challenges, and Opportunities

Abstract
Additive Manufacturing (AM) has ushered into a new era in product design, development, and manufacturing. In this talk, the history and evolution of additive manufacturing technologies will be briefly touched upon. Some of the important commercially available AM techniques will be considered in greater detail. The current status of metal AM and the way forward will be discussed. In the second part of this talk, the work carried out in the past ten years at IIT Madras on the use of friction deposition for AM will be presented in some detail. The relevance of this work to a recently launched commercial AM process called “MELD” will be highlighted. The significance of friction deposition and other emerging solid-state AM approaches will be discussed.
 
Brief Profile of the Speaker
Dr. G. D. Janaki Ram is a Professor of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), Chennai. He works in the broad fields of welding and additive manufacturing. From 1998 to 2005, Dr. Janaki Ram served as a Scientist in Regional Centre for Military Airworthiness (Materials), DRDO. In 2005, he went to Utah State University, USA, for his post-doctoral work in additive manufacturing. He returned to India in 2008 to begin a faculty position at IIT Madras. From July 2014 to March 2015, Dr. Janaki Ram worked as a Visiting Professor in the University of Louisville, USA. Over the past ten years, he has worked on several sponsored research projects and taught courses in the fields of materials joining and additive manufacturing. He has authored or coauthored more than 100 research papers in refereed journals till date.
