Prof. Mayank Vatsa, Department of CSE and AIDE School, IIT Jodhpur, has been elected as “IEEE Fellow” for contributions to secure biometric recognition. Recognizing the achievements of its members is an important part of the mission of IEEE. Each year, following a rigorous evaluation procedure, the IEEE Fellow Committee recommends a select group of recipients for elevation to IEEE Fellow. Less than 0.1% of voting members are selected annually for this member grade elevation. The IEEE Board of Directors at its November 2021 meeting elevated Prof. Vatsa to IEEE Fellow, effective 1 January 2022 with the following citation: “for contributions to secure biometric recognition”.
Prof. Vatsa’s technical contributions have focused on developing novel formulations in deep learning for problems related to biometrics authentication. While designing algorithms to solve the challenges in biometrics, he has has also been involved in designing new algorithms to address core problems related to machine learning. Some of his novel contributions include a novel multi-objective evolutionary algorithm, introducing deep dictionary learning, and several novel formulations in deep learning.
Prof. Vatsa has made several impactful contributions ranging from designing novel algorithms and datasets in biometrics, and Standards for national projects. He has also contributed in starting undergraduate programs at IIIT Delhi and IIT Jodhpur, Technology and Innovation Hub, and School in AI and Data Science. He is highly prolific in professional activities to promote biometrics, including his instrumental role in starting IEEE T-BIOM. He has an outstanding h-index of 55 and publications record of 300+ papers. For his research contributions in deep learning and adversarial mitigation, in 2018, he received the highly coveted “Swarnajayanti Fellowship'' from the President of India’s office and DST.
