IIT Jodhpur announces launch of BTech in AI & Data Science program from the 2020-21 Academic Session

While Artificial Intelligence aims to create machines to act with higher levels of intelligence and emulate the human capabilities of sense, comprehend and act, Data Science is the art of generating insight, knowledge and predictions by processing data pertaining to a system or a process. Future industry will be driven by the synergistic combination of data science and artificial intelligence.

IIT Jodhpur will offer a unique undergraduate program in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science from the academic session 2020-21. The curriculum includes courses in computer science, mathematics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and their applications in various domains. The course structure also provides opportunities to the students to explore specialized areas like visual computing, socio-digital realities, language technologies, robotics, and Artificial Intelligence of things. Building on the core background of AI and Data Science, students will have the opportunity to pursue MBA (Tech) in the fifth year as dual degree option in the School of Management and Entrepreneurship. An interesting feature of the B Tech programme is the opportunity for the interested students to choose a minor area which would prepare them for an entrepreneurial career in the field of AI and Data Science.

IIT Jodhpur has, possibly, the best laboratory resources in the country to support academic programmes in the areas of AI and Data Science. IIT Jodhpur is the only IIT to have the latest AI Supercomputer (A-100) from NVIDIA besides DGX-2. Consequently, students will be exposed to state-of-the-art computing resources and tools. State of the art Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality lab at IIT Jodhpur established by Samsung is another landmark resource for the students to experiment with AI applications in these areas. Technology innovation Hub (supported by the department of Science and Technology, GoI to the tune of about Rs. 115 crores) in the areas of Computer Vision, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality being established at IIT Jodhpur will make a marked difference in the quality of laboratory and human resources available for supporting the programme.

Prof. Santanu Chaudhury, Director, IIT Jodhpur, said “under the broad umbrella of IIT Jodhpur’s unique proposition of AI  for everything, students belonging to the academic programmes in AI, Data and Computational Sciences will be part of scientific innovations for solving local and global engineering and social problems in close collaboration with industry. Students will be part of institute’s initiatives for ensuring better life  and livelihood for all with AI as the enabling force.  Unlike many other institutes, IIT Jodhpur would like AI and Data Science students to explore transdisciplinary research agenda fostering collaborative opportunities across all the departments of IIT Jodhpur and partner organizations.”

Prof. Richa Singh, Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering said “As the demand for these areas increases, there is also an increasing need for building the future workforce for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. IIT Jodhpur already has MTech in AI, MTech in Data and Computational Science, and MTech-PhD dual degree program in AI. Inclusion of the new BTech program in AI and Data Science makes IIT Jodhpur a unique institute in India to have educational programs at all three levels, UG, Master’s and doctoral in the area of AI and Data Science.”
