Abstract Professor Saha will first explain his research activities in the area of Robotics at IIT Delhi. He will then introduce the concept of RoCKBEE (Robotics Competition Knowledge-based Education in Engineering) with which he will demonstrate how the experiences of designing and building robots by the students for competitions can lead to research and innovation besides learning skills to develop products. Later, it will be shown how the knowledge of robotics can be applied/extended to design optimization of many devices and processes used by the rural people in the society. This aspect is pursued by the speaker under the banner MuDRA or Multibody Dynamics for Rural Applications. Several examples from his experiences of developing products for the rural sectors as a part of the activities under Rural Technology Action Group (RuTAG) at IIT Delhi will also be shared.

Bio-data Professor Subir Kumar Saha, a 1983 Mechanical Engineering graduate from the Regional Engineering College (Now NIT), Durgapur, India, completed his M.Tech. from IIT Kharagpur, India, and Ph.D. from McGill University, Canada. Upon completion of his Ph.D., he joined Toshiba Corporation’s R&D Center in Japan. After 4-years of work experience in Japan, he has been serving IIT Delhi since 1996. He is actively engaged in teaching, research, and technology, and completed projects worth more than Rs. 5 Crores (~ USD 1.0 million). He established the Mechatonics Laboratory at IIT Delhi in 2001. As recognition of his international contributions, Professor Saha was awarded the Humboldt Fellowship in 1999 by the AvH Foundation, Germany, and the Naren Gupta Chair Professorship at IIT Delhi in 2010. Also, he has been Visiting Faculty in Canada, Australia, and Italy. Professor Saha has written several books. A text book on “Introduction to Robotics” published by McGraw-Hill in India and Singapore was also translated in Mexican Spanish. He has also written three course booklets on “Robotics” for IGNOU, New Delhi. To make robotics learning fun, a software RoboAnalyzer was developed under his supervision. He has co-authored two more books with two of his former Ph.D. students, 1) “Dynamics of Tree-type Robotics Systems” supported with ReDySim (Recursive Dynamics Simulator) software; and 2) “Dynamics and Balancing of Multibody Systems.” Both were published by Springer. He has more than 175 research publications in reputed journals/conference proceedings, and has delivered more than 150 invited/keynote lectures in India and abroad.
