IEEE AP-S Young Professional Ambassador Talk

About the IEEE AP-S Young Professional Ambassador:
AP-S YP Ambassadors are chosen from AP-S members of young professionals aimed at inspiring, informing and involving AP-S Young Professionals on a variety of topics both technical and non-technical to enhance their interest and engagement in the field of Antennas and Propagation.
Details of the Event:
  • Event: IEEE AP-S Young Professional Ambassador Talk
  • Title: Millimeter-wave antennas and their interactions with users for 5G mobile terminals
  • Speaker: Dr. Shuai Zhang, Associate Professor, Aalborg University, Denmark.
  • Date: 15th Sept. 2022
  • Timing: 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM (IST)
About the talk:
As one of the key technologies in future 5G cellular communication systems, millimeter wave (mm-wave) will be applied for 5G mobile handsets. In these systems, beam steerable arrays with high gain have to be utilized at both base stations and user terminals in order to overcome the path loss. At base stations, there is ample room for complex antenna array designs. However, in mobile terminals, there is very limited space left for 5G arrays after accommodating 2G, 3G and 4G antenna systems. The only power supply in a cellphone is a small  battery, which requires low-loss and low-cost beamforming. Moreover, user's mobility and blockage also raise some more new issues. This talk will focus on introducing the challenges in mm-wave 5G mobile handsets. As some examples, recent progress will be introduced in the area of mm-wave beam-steerable antenna arrays and their biological effects for 5G mobile terminals. Integration of terminal antennas at mmwave and sub 6 GHz will also be one part of this talk.
