Nonadiabatic Modal Dynamics Around Exceptional Points in an All-Lossy Dual-Mode Optical Waveguide: Toward Chirality-Driven Asymmetric Mode Conversion

Abstract
We have explored an exclusive switch-like light-guiding element on the framework of a specialty all-lossy optical waveguide to convert one particular shape of light field to another specific shape. Once the light is launched, the output from the device depends on the direction of propagation of light. The technique has exploited a new form of singularity and achieved using the variation of lossy dopants along the length of the device. This singularity, commonly known as Exceptional Point, is a special point in the device where light poses very high intensity. The device can be fabricated using standard techniques and the output signal is not affected by noise. This scheme releases the constraint of needing the active supply of power and would be accessible to the majority of conventional optical elements. The unconventional device poses a wide versatility to design efficient optical mode converters on chip-scale footprint and would find application in all-optical signal processing for next generation.
