About the Speaker
Amitabha Ghosh received his BE (1962) and ME (1964) degrees from Bengal Engineering College, Shibpur (Calcutta University). Subsequently he joined the Mechanical Engineering Department of this college as a Lecturer (1965), continued his doctoral research and obtained his D.Phil. degree (1969) from Calcutta University. He then joined IIT Kanpur (1971) as an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering and became a Professor (1975). He was at the Technical University Aachen with Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellowship (1977-78).    
 
 
 He served IIT Kharagpur as Director (1997-2002) and subsequently returned to Kanpur where he continued till his retirement (2006).Currently he is a Platinum Jubilee Senior Scientist at the National Academy of Sciences, India, Allahabad and also an Honorary Distinguished Professor at Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur.
His research and academic interests are in Basic Mechanics, Kinematics and Dynamics, Advanced Manufacturing and Robotics. He has guided more than 75 M.Tech. and 18 Ph.D. students and published about 125 research papers. His five books on engineering are considered classics and are followed extensively in India and abroad. Besides, he has published two books on astronomy and astrophysics. Professor Ghosh was the Chairman, Research Council of Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute, Durgapur from 2001 to 2013 and has chaired the FIST committee of the DST (Department of Science and Technology, Government of India) in Engineering Science for 6 years and DST PAC in Manufacturing Science for 3 years. Professor Ghosh was also the Chairman of the Engineering Division of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, India, for 3 years and acted as the Indian Coordinator for the DST– JSPS Indo-Japan Science Collaboration Program in Engineering from 1998 to 2005. Professor Ghosh received three Gold Medals from Calcutta University for standing first among the students of all branches of Engineering at both Bachelors’ and Masters’ examinations. He has also received quite a few other awards including Professor Jai Krishna award from the Indian National Academy of Engineering, Doctor of Science (h.c.) from Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur, and was the first to receive the Distinguished Teacher award form IIT Kanpur.
He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India), Indian National Academy of Engineering, New Delhi, Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi, and the National Academy of Sciences, India, Allahabad.
